Dirty Pretty Things - Waterloo to Anywhere

Dirty Pretty Things were formed in 2005 about a year after The Libertines broke up, they were formed by Carl Barat who was formally in The Libertines, but due to a dispute between him and the infamous Pete Doherty, The Libertines called it a day and went their separate ways. Hence the birth Dirty Pretty Things as well as Babyshambles, but that is an entirely different review. This band almost had as many issues with their name, as they had with experiences of drunken misconduct and drug use. Apart from calling themselves Dirty Pretty Things they have also called themselves The Bearded Clam Lovers Experience and Bright Young Things among others. It is believed that the band got their name from the 2002 movie titled, yes you guessed it, “Dirty Pretty Things”. Since releasing the album “Waterloo to Anywhere” on 8 May 2006 the band also released the album “Romance at Short Notice” and the DVD “Puffing on a Coffin Nail”. The band played their last gig on 20 December, 2008, stating “It is time to do other things, not Libertines” although I have heard rumours that the Libertines are actually planning on working together on a new album.

“Waterloo to Anywhere” is a fun album, fun to listen to, fun to sing along to, fun to party to and even fun to dance to. Carl Barat’s British accent is clearly distinguishable throughout the whole album and his vocals manage to carry the music and visa versa. This album has definite resemblance to other British artists like Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian. The music can be classified as indie rock and maintains a fast pace throughout the album. Guitars, drums and vocals are the main ingredients of this album, mixed together producing a brilliant composition which can be listened to over and over again. Catchy choruses and and intelligent production alos play a big role in this album and singles like “Deadwood” and “Bang Bang Youre Dead” have received great commercial success. This is an excellent album, it is a real shame that their second album “Romance at Short Notice” is not any good at all.

Definition:

In popular music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.

Independent labels have been known to strive for minimal influence on the artist they represent, avoiding the artist-cultivating behavior of many major labels.
