Islands - Vapours
Islands are an indie pop / electro band from Montreal, Canada. Islands were formed in 2005 after the split of the band "The Unicorns". The Unicorns consisted of three members, two of whom went on to form Islands. The Islands recorded their first album, "Return to the Sea" in the bedroom of the drummer Jamie Thompson and it was released in 2006. Islands have worked with a vast array of exceptional artists like Wolf Parade and Arcade Fire. The Islands have a large indie cult following and Jamie Thompson has been quoted as saying "I think the Islands are one of the best, if not the best band out there these days, I have every confidence that they will do incredibly well." Jamie said this on his departure from Islands 28 May 2006 but he returned to Islands on the 19th of June 2009, just in time to work on their latest album "Vapours" released on 22 September 2009.
Firstly I would like to start by saying that I do no like this album cover, not at all. It really looks like amateur photoshop meets the eighties but other than that I cannot complain about this album, whatsoever. "Vapours" is a superb piece of work, the production has been done extremely well and greatly exceeds that of previous Islands albums. The albums consists of an eclectic mixture of synths, drum machines, guitars, bass, sequenced programming and also an electric sitar. Track one "Switched On" immediately impresses the listener with its melodic rhythms and powerful drum line. The album contains some addictive hooks but also a couple of darker, more serious tunes. This album has managed to lift Islands out of their "Lets just mess around" vibe and bring them into an entirely new light. Its hard to point out exceptional songs on this album because each song is a pleasure and I did not once see the need to even think about skipping a track. Therefore I won't choose any songs, instead I will leave it up to you to go and get the album and hear for yourself.

Awesome Blogs!
Definition:
In popular music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.
Independent labels have been known to strive for minimal influence on the artist they represent, avoiding the artist-cultivating behavior of many major labels.
