Indie Arto - Indie Music

Stuart Newman - Single but Defective

Stuart Newman contacted me a couple of days ago, asking me to review his latest album "Single but Defective". I often get requests from artists who came across Indie Arto and requests that I review their latest album. This is wonderful but often these artists do not really offer what I am looking for so instead of breaking their spirit by reviewing their music, I rather just avoid the album and don’t say anything at all. With that said, this is definitely not the case with Stuart Newman, in fact it is the exact opposite.

The artist Bio which I provide here is what Stuart supplied me with, I do not really see any reason to change it, so here it is. Unsigned 22 year old English D.I.Y songwriter currently living near Brighton (UK). All the songwriting, vocals, voices and music is created by Stuart Newman. He has a mellow acoustic, lyrical sound that resonates. Fans have described the music as “sunny days on a rainy sky” and “A Beatley Nick Drake”. It’s music for when it’s late at night you need to think or be on your own. The music sometimes drifts towards the political… sometimes towards the quirky… Thinking music, for the thinking music fan. With influences ranging from right across the spectrum, Newman’s writing draws from different creative pools, creating songs with different personalities. Fans have often compared Stuart Newman’s music to that of Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Sparklehorse and Leonard Cohen. Some of his successes to date include having radio play on BBC6 Music, BFBS Radio and being played in gas stations throughoutConnecticut on the AMP Radio Network. Newman has also had an interview on Chichester (UK) local radio at SpiritFM. Newman’s current album project “Single But Defective” has initially been offered as a free download in order to continue to spread the music far and wide internationally. Newman's right-handed, and yet he plays guitar left-handed. Weird.

As I mentioned above, this album and artist completely blew me away, the fact that he is not signed can only be a byproduct of the global economic recession. The album "Single But Defective" is easy on the ears, very listener friendly and it has a certain musical simplicity to it, which grabs the listeners attention and leaves them craving for more. While listening to this album, time seemed to evade me, before I knew it I had listened to the entire album, without even thinking of skipping a track. The album kicks off with the track "51st State", which is a beautiful "Leonard Cohen" like song, leaving the listener with a strong political message and a hunger for more. When listening to the second track "Cry Wolf", you cannot help but move your body to this catchy tune, it is also complete with background sound effects like snoring, yawning, whispering and shouting voices. Stuart Newman is blessed with an exceptional voice and his vocal skills are evident right across the album, on  an emotional level, it is comparable with great artists like Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver and Volcano Choir). The tracks on this album range from a sort of undefined sad melody to a cheerful, snap your fingers and nod your head tune, in no particular order. It is hard to single out tracks on this album, due to each tracks own uniqueness but when listening to the final track called "Release", I can imagine this song being used for the epic conclusion of a movie, where the protagonist rides his horse or drives Mustang,  into the sunset. So folks, I conclude this review by advising you to immediately download the full album "Single but Defective" while it's still free. This artist definitely has something, that extra something special, which makes a good musician a great artist, it's hard to believe he is only 22 years old. Look out for an interview which will be coming soon on indie arto and watch out for Stuart Newman because he is definitely is here to stay. To quote Stuart Newman from the track Summer Messin, "I'm the next best thing since sliced bread".

In popular music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing.

Independent labels have been known to strive for minimal influence on the artist they represent, avoiding the artist-cultivating behavior of many major labels.
